Japan
Taigei is the third Japanese submarine to use lithium-ion batteries instead of the more traditional lead-acid batteries for underwater propulsion.
When fully submerged, they switch to battery power, and a submarine can last only so long on lead-acid batteries. The new sub's lithium-ion batteries greatly increase the submarine’s endurance operating underwater, though they do come with some risk.
